Editing for Your Bottom Line

I am proud to call Dr. Patricia Ross my editor—and my friend! She is brilliant at what she does. She helped me find my writing voice, picked me up when I faltered, and encouraged me through the labyrinth of the manuscript-creation process. Her ability to hone complex material into engaging images and to convert an academic research style into a warm conversational tone was amazing. She’s gold in the editing world.

Dr. Ross is amazing! I am a success coach, and my book Boston Marathon or Bust is being published by a New York publisher.  She saved my book—literally. I was getting ready to send the final draft of the book off to the publishers.  I already had five highly qualified people, including a professional editor, look at my book.  I asked Dr. Ross to give it one last look, and I am very glad I did.  She not only found grammatical and mechanical mistakes, she cleaned up my writing.  She made my writing flow better and I know that now my idea is clearly presented.  She really is the best of the best! Thank you Dr. Patricia Ross.  I couldn’t have finished my book without you!

Letter to David Handcock, Owner, Morgan James Publishing Company:
Dear David:

I wanted to thank you again for the introduction to Dr. Ross. She has been invaluable in the flow and organization of my book and just a tremendous asset to the editing process! I’ve learned a lot working with her and can’t imagine how a book author can get to the actual grammar/editing stage without first following some of the principles that she taught me….Content is once thing but then organizing it into a fashion that works and flows well is another. Dr. Ross has helped me understand the difference in the various tones a book can take as well as the “pattern” or “formula” that reads well for each book regardless of the subject matter.  She is a valuable asset to the book production process.

Thank you again!

Editing

I am not a writer; however, I wanted my book, Winning in the 5th Quarter: Applying the Secrets of Football to Your Life-Strategy Playbook, to really pack a punch. I also have this idea that "bigger is better" with books.  I sent Dr. Ross a huge manuscript, over 300 pages.  She cut, honed, and carefully re-crafted my book to make sure that it not only stayed true to my original vision but that it did it in the most concise and readable way possible.

She is a delight to work with and I've hired her to not only read Winning in the 5th Quarter but  to put together my next book: Are you Depressed Or Is it Just Me? Executing Positive Change to Get Results in a Down Economy.  I'm pleased and more than a little relieved to know that I have an editor who will work with me to make my writing sing!

When I got my book accepted at Morgan James, I was ecstatic...but apprehensive.  I was told that I would need the book to be edited. I’m not a writer. I just knew that I had a story to tell.  I didn’t know the first thing about editing, but I contacted all the editors Morgan James recommended.  I instantly connected with Patricia, but she was also the most expensive.  One of my board members told me to go with my gut, so I hired Patricia.

My company, Healing Bridges, is a non-profit dedicated to helping the women and children in war-torn Africa become educated and economically self-sufficient.  Patricia immediately got behind the cause by making sure that my story was told in a way that was compelling but that also honored who I am.  I’m from Eritrea, Africa, and Eritreans don’t like to relive the past. But my past needed to be told for it is the story of how I survived massacre at the hands of the corrupt Ethiopian government, fled here to the U.S. and how I returned to my homeland to help. Patricia did a superb job of bringing to life my story: Healing Bridges: From Massacre to Empowerment to life. She also respected me and my beliefs and gently guided me into revealing the parts of my story that were hard to face. I now count her as one of my closest friends, and if you are writing a memoir, I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Thank you Patricia for all that you’ve done for me and for Healing Bridges

“Thank you, Dr. Ross for helping me make Car Buying Revealed into a coherent book that says what I want it to say!  You gave me great direction on how to revise my book and I appreciate that you were always available when I needed a helping hand.”

“I hired Dr. Ross to just copy edit my book, BEing the Present: 101 Ways to Inspire Living and Giving.  However, when she read the draft, she recommended changes that I knew needed to be made. She quickly but effectively pulled out the stories that my co-author, Cynthia Aliza Blake was trying to tell.  She helped me clarify my thoughts while respecting my voice. Most important, Patricia dedicated herself to my book and was with me every step of the way. Thank you Patricia for all your hard work!”

Patricia reorganized, reworked, reworded, and re-engineered my book into what I know will be a best seller! My book, Trust—are You Kidding: What’s Wrong with the Current Trust System and How Emerging Technology Can Help was a mess. I had spent two years writing it and I had a lot to say, but I was all over the place. Dr. Ross stepped in and took control of the project. She worked hard—and her task was daunting. She had to basically learn the whole trust system, which she did in record time. She then had to totally reorganize my whole book—she ended up having to do two full content edits on it because the first draft wasn’t quite right. She never wavered in her dedication to seeing the book done. Patricia made sure that everything was as clear and concise as can be.  It was a long haul and I am very glad that I had Patricia to take the helm and write her way through to the end. Thanks Patricia. You are invaluable!”
