Okay, maybe I’m a bit strange. I love grammar. I also love writing and my purpose in life is to help people express themselves better.
I also love to teach writing! When I was 25 years old, I started teaching writing at the University of Denver. I walked into my first classroom; my students thought I was one of them! They quickly learned that I was the teacher, and I loved all of them. At graduations, they would come up to me and tell me I was their favorite!
While I was working towards my degree, I was a temporary employee in the summer time. In every job I held, word would quickly get out that I could really edit! I was always swamped with requests to “read this letter” or “fix that e-mail.” I obliged, no matter how large or small the document because I have always loved to help people write more clearly.
In 2004, I finally finished my Ph.D. in English from New York University. Determined to become a tenured-track professor, I was working hard, researching and teaching at the University of Colorado at Denver. (My dissertation was published by Routledge Press—they actually asked me to submit the manuscript, something that rarely happens in academia!) I had taught hundreds of college students how to write better. But I had become aware of a disturbing trend. Too many of my students could not write a decent sentence.
I grew up in Louisville Colorado, now one of the top towns in the country in which to raise a family. (My parents still live in the house I grew up in!) When I was a kid, it was so small that everyone knew everyone else. I went to St. Louis Catholic School, and the year that I started was the year that the school brought in nuns from County Cork, Ireland. What an experience! I was a good student so I never experienced the “scary nun” syndrome. What I did get was a stellar education, and that included grammar and writing. I could diagram extremely complex sentences in the 6th grade!
In 2001, I took all of my writing experience, and started my own company, Learning Basics Training and Tutoring company. My primary product was a writing workshop that I had designed for my students. Since then, I have worked with numerous companies, including the U.S. Olympic Committee, Colorado Springs, The Colorado Society of CPAs, Erhardt, Keefe, Steiner, and Hottman, Intrado Communications, One World Arts, and Staubauch Commercial Real Estate. I have developed workshops in writing, communication, ethics, and the Art of Teaching.
Through all of this I have edited. And edited. And edited some more….In 2007, I hooked up with Morgan James Publishing Company. My first contact with Morgan James came through working with Scott Sharp Armstrong on his book Boston Marathon or Bust: How to Achieve your Life, Sports, and Business Goals in Record Time. He hooked me up with David Hancock, the owner. He liked my work and graciously put me on the list of their editors. (Scott also liked working with me so much that he asked me to co-author a book on affirmations. We did: The Best Affirmations Workbook: the 30-day How-To Guide to Actively Create the Life You Want (www.bestaffirmations.com)! I quickly became the “go to” editor and because of my work with Morgan James authors, I have been able to specialize. I only ghost-write or edit non-fiction, mostly business, self help, inspirational and educational books. I will also do the occasional memoir—but I warn you, if I do, we’ll be best friends for life!
Call me! Write me—but don’t worry about your grammar! I will bring a life-time of experience to your writing and you’ll love what my expertise and my enthusiasm can do for your writing!
To your writing success!!
And remember, if you call me at (303) 762-1469 I will give you a free consultation!
