Editing for Your Bottom Line |
|
Editing can be a very in-depth process and good editing often requires a very close relationship between the author and the editor. I have a strict policy: the author’s idea and voice are never to be compromised.
Also, I like to be up front. I will not edit any manuscript that promotes the use of drugs—including psychiatric drugs. I also refuse to edit any manuscript that I feel compromises my ethics. This basically means if you have something that is graphically violent, overly sexual, or intentionally harms anyone, I’m not the editor for you.
Writing Coach: Writing a book is an involved process—it can be one of the toughest things you’ll ever do (I know because my first book took four years and a lot of positive affirmations to get done!) You are an expert at something, but perhaps you need some help with the writing process. Maybe you have a stack of white papers and one-page tear sheets; perhaps you have recorded a bunch of teleseminars; you might even have a stack of papers thrown together in a box—and you’re not sure how to put it all together. Sometimes folks need some coaching on how to set the book up. Some need more and some less but everyone could used some help through the whole process. I call on all my experience as a writing teacher, a twice-published author, and an editor of the 14 or so books I write/edit per year to help you climb the mountain and get your book done! If you already have your book outlined or even have a draft done, here are the levels of editing/writing that I do: -Ghost Writing: This is the most in-depth level of writing/editing. This is where I work very closely with you to help you either write your book or revise it heavily. This usually takes many, many hours and a dedication by both you and me to see the project through to the end. -Content Editing: this is still very high-level editing. It is where I rewrite and smooth out the content of the book. At this level, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and typos are not considered. They are left in so that the editor—me—can concentrate on ensuring, to the best of my ability, that the manuscript’s idea is coherent, that its points are presented in the most logical way, and that its transitions are smooth. -Line Editing: this is a type of editing that looks only at the syntax and construction of sentences. It is where the editor goes through the manuscript line by line looking at each sentence and making sure that it is readable. -Proofing: While I don’t handle the final proofing of my manuscripts, I recommend that all my authors send their book through two rounds of proofs. Then it is considered “professionally edited.” It’s tough to catch all the mistakes. Contact Elizabeth George one of my authors at www.TheCompatibilityCode.com. She’ll regale you with some hilarious stories of the mistakes we caught in the eleventh hour of production on her book!! Need your book recorded? I also do that! Those Irish nuns also taught me how to pronounce my words well—and I love to read out loud. I’ve hooked up with AirShow, a multi Grammy-award winning studio in Boulder, Colorado. The quality of sound is superb. Here’s Scott Armstrong’s audio version of Boston Marathon or Bust: http://bouldercoachingacademy.com/audiobook/BostonAudioBook.html. Take a listen for yourself and if you like my voice and how I read, then give me a holler. I’ll be happy to help!
I also still love to do writing and communication workshops through Peak Proficiency Solutions. These include: -Professional Writing for X (I customize each workshop to fit the business/industry.) -Writing Basics: The Sentence -Everyday Ethics (Again this is tailored to fit whatever business/profession has hired me to do this Workshop.)
